Data: The Building Blocks of Smart Cities
Devices such as smartphones, wearables, cameras, and sensors generate a continuous stream of data, which is valuable for the city and municipal authorities to support their policies. Agoria, Belgium’s largest employers’ organization and trade association, recently published a whitepaper aimed at local policymakers that explains why cities and municipalities of the future will utilize data as building blocks. The whitepaper guides policymakers and helps them understand where they stand in their data policy.
The implementation of modern technologies has upgraded traditional networks and services. In smart cities, data is integrated across policy domains and is a crucial part of decision-making; it offers a holistic vision of the various processes and organizational advantage over. With private data being interconnected with the data from utilities, public transport companies, and local authorities, real-time sensors immediately collect the data to interpret and enrich it, making it ready for use.
In order to evolve into a smart city, data is not the only requirement; a solid data architecture is paramount as well. It is critical to determine how data is stored, processed, and delivered to utilize the information to provide better services. The data architecture has to be flexible, user-friendly, secure, and interoperable while maintaining ease of accessibility.
